Welcome to Katherine Dereli Art

“There is a difference between what we see of a person or a landscape and how we feel about it.
As a representational artist I am interested in navigating that perceptual gap. I want to create a painting or sculpture which is loaded with the subjective experience of the artist but with enough breadth for the viewer to formulate their own connection with the subject.”

I see representational paintings and sculptures as strange fascinating cultural objects. We often think of them as transcriptions of reality but, a lot of the time, they are more like personal statements about things written in a shared visual language. This language is taken from art history as well as cinema, graphic design and the selective attention fostered by everyday life. I approach my work as a form of calligraphy inscribing on a canvas or a lump of clay, a reaction in our common visual language.

I work, where possible, directly from the subject minimising the use of interpretative intermediaries such as photography. I want someone looking at what I do to be closer to the raw perception. I want what I work on to be more like how things look to me than how photographs of things look.
